Hastinapur Sanctuary was established in the year 1986, through out Ghaziabad, Meerut, Jyotiba Phule Nagar and Bijnore. The Sanctuary is spread across a wide area of 2073 sq. km. Hastinapur Sanctuary consists of a variety of wild animals which includes, Leopard, Wild Cat, Cheetal, Sambhar, Nilgai, Hyena, Alligators and numerous species of birds. Hastinapur Sanctuary is well connected and it could be reached via Meerat which is only 40 km away. Delhi airport is also near by, roughly 110 km for the Sanctuary.
Hastinapur Sanctuary and National Park is pregnant with numerous species of wildlife, as result of the diverse topography and ecological setting. The wild animals range from mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and marine and aquatic life. Amongst the invertebrates Centipedes, Dragonflies, Wasps, Scorpions, Termites and Lepidopteras are found the most. Peacock, the National Bird, is also found through out the reserve. There are a diverse range of wild animals in Hastinapur Sanctuary, like Leopard, Sloth Bear, various types of wild cats such as Civet, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Wolf, Jackal, Wild Boar, Hyena, Chital, Nilgai and many more are scattered though the Sanctuary. Alligators and Gharials are also found in abundance.
Due to the swampy land beside the Ganga, Hastinapur Sanctuary has become a refuge for migratory birds. More than 350 different species of birds can be seen here like Sarus Crane, White Necked Stork, Black Stork, Painted Stork, and also nocturnal birds of prey like various types of Owls like the Jungle Owlet and the Great Indian Horned Owl. Moreover Kingfisher, Woodpecker, Bulbul, Bee Eaters and Minivet are also present in the reserve.
Other than Alligators, Gangetic Dolphins are also found along the river, particularly between Bijnor and Haridwar.
