Hardoi District, an administrative district of Uttar Pradesh, has its headquarters at Hardoi town. Hardoi District is located between 26 degree 53 minutes to 27 degree 46 minutes north latitude and 79 degree 41 minutes to 80 degree 46 minutes east longitude. Administration of Hardoi District has five tehsils namely Hardoi, Sawayajpur, Bilgram, Shahabad and Sandila. The sub-divisions of Hardoi District include 19 development blocks, 1101 Gram Sabha, 191 Panchayats and 1983 revenue villages. Further, there are seven municipal boards in Hardoi District.
History of Hardoi District
Hardoi District is associated with `Hiranyakashyap`. Its present name Hardoi is a distorted version of its earlier name `Haridrohi`. According to some legends, this district was colonized by Hardevbaksh and just because of this reason there is an old locality Hardevganj exists in the city. Mallawa, Bilgram, Pihani, Shahabad, Sandila and Ruiyaa are the places of historical significance. According to some historians Mallawa was colonized by Buddhists while some believed that Syed Salar Masood Ghazi came here. Earlier Mallawa was district headquarters. Pihani is derived from Persian word Pinhani (place of shelter); it is believed that Humayun, Mughal Emperor took shelter in the forests of Pihani when he was defeated by Sher Shah Suri. Some of the popular historical and religious monuments of Hardoi District are Saiyyadbara Masjid, Jama Masjid Shahabad, Firojshah Tuglaq Masjid and Hatyaharan Pilgrim.
Economy of Hardoi District
Economy of Hardoi District is dependent upon agriculture. Out of total area of Hardoi District (594700 hectare), only 398045 hectare land is used for agriculture purposes. Paddy, sugarcane, wheat, vegetables, pulses and oilseeds are cultivated in the district. Approximately 14425 hectare land is used for horticulture. Moreover, there are several industries in the district. The major industry in the district is M/s SAF YEAST Co. Ltd at Sandila tehsil. The second plant of this company was established in 1990 in Sandila and is the single largest producer of yeast in India. Further, this company has established Leon Research Center in the in the year 1989 to develop appropriate technology for industrial application of yeast in India.
Hardoi is situated at a distance of around 110 km from Lucknow and approximately 394 kms from Delhi. Amausi International Airport is the nearest airport. Hardoi is easily accessed from the other major cities of the state.
