Gurbux Singh is a former Indian field hockey player, who participated in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, as a player, and in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics as a joint captain. He was born in modern day Pakistan, but settled down eventually in Kolkata, where he first made his mark in club hockey. He is currently secretary of the Bengal Hockey Association and one of the Selectors of the Indian National Hockey Team. He was given the Arjuna Award in 1966.

Early life of Gurbux Singh
Gurbux Singh was born in Peshawar (in modern day Pakistan) on 11th February 1936. After the partition, his family underwent several displacements, and eventually settled in Meerut, where he completed his graduation in Agra University. Gurbux Singh started playing hockey when he was 16, representing Agra University. He later moved to Kolkata in 1937, where he distinguished himself in club hockey.

Career of Gurbux Singh
Gurbux Singh was a skilled full-back player and he made his first international debut in a tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1960, and also participated in the International Hockey Tournament in 1962. He led the team by 1963 that won the Gold at the 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok. He was also a member of the 1964 team at the Tokyo Olympics, where India emerged as the champions. He shared captaincy with hockey veteran Prithipal Singh in 1968, where India came in third place. He retired in 1968, and made his first forays into coaching and umpiring.

He supervised the 1982 Asiad, and was the coach of the French team from 1974-75, and trained the Indian team for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He managed the Indian team at the 1973 World Cup and 1983 Champions Trophy.

Gurbux Singh was conferred with the Arjuna Award after the Indian team`s success at the 1966 Asian Games.

He is one of India`s most dedicated hockey players, having served the game for over 50 years in various capacities, and is credited for doing much to better the state of Indian hockey, establishing him as a true luminary in Indian Hockey.
