This is a stadium that is built in one of the most polluted cities in India, Kanpur. The Green Park Stadium Kanpur is located near the river Ganges and accommodates around 40,000 people inside the stadium. The major part of the stadium is uncovered with open roof. This stadium, which was set up in 1945, has undergone frequent changes and lacks the touch of tradition that other front line test venues boasts of. The floodlights in this stadium are slung low, and have been an issue of contention for teams for a long time. The lights were used for the first when South Africa toured India in 2010.
Out of all the Test matches that have been played here have ended in a draw, due to the lifeless pitches, which of course is responsible for the soil type of this region, as it does not help pace and bounce. For a long time no international matches were held in this stadium until of course the authorities concerned prepared a cricket friendly pitch.
Traditionally the pitches at Green Park have been batsman friendly. The last of the three centuries by Mohammad Azharuddin during his incredible debut were hit at his venue itself. In almost all the matches that have been played here have provides runs. In 1986-87, India Vs Sri Lanka match totals runs scored was 1096 and losing only 17 wickets. The fantastic inning of 45 balls century by Afridi was hit at this very ground.
