Gorubathan is located at 26.97 degree north to 88.70 degree east. It has an average elevation of 417 metres. Among the local people of Gorubathan, this place is known as Sombare. The name has it origin in the weekly village market which is organized here every Monday.

Gorubathan is situated at an altitude of about 1500 feet. It is neither very hot during the summers, nor is it affected by the excess chill of the hills during the winter months. The destination remains accessible throughout the year for tourists. The months of July and August witness maximum rainfall brought in by the monsoon.

Gorubathan is situated on the east bank of the Chel River. Chel River allures the tourists for its beauty. Gorubathan poses an ancient fort which is now in ruins. The name of the old fort is known as Dalim Fort. This ruin of the Dalim Fort is located on the top of the hill near Gorubathan. Gorubathan also poses a large number of tea gardens including Sylee, Fagu and many others. These tea gardens are of prime importance among the weekend travellers.

Gorubathan is attracted to the people for weekends, as it behaves as an escapade from the din and bustle city life. Other than Chel River, which is the cynosure of the spot, there is another river known as Neora River, a small stream is also known for its beautiful landscape. The mountains and forests in Gorubathan attract a lot of tourists of both national and international origin.

The town of Gorubathan is 90 kilometres from Kalimpong town and 59 kilometers from Siliguri. One needs to reach Gorubathan by travelling from Siliguri on National Highway 31 till Damdim. From Damdim, a road to the north goes to Lava, another place for tourist attraction in northern part of West bengal through Gorubathan. One can easily access Lava, Faforkheti, Dalim Fort and many other places in the northern part of West Bengal, the foothills of Shiwalik region of Himalaya (Lesser Himalayas) through Gorubathan

Gorubathan block consists of rural areas only with 11 gram panchayats. These gram panchayats are Dalim Gorubathan-I, Gorubathan-II, Patengodak, Todeytangta, Kumai, Pokhreybong, Samsing, Aahaley, Nim and Rongo. The headquarters of this small hilly village is in Fagu. Fagu is also one of the most important tourist attractions.
