Etymology of Goripalayam Mosque
The word Goripalayam has been derived from the Persian word "gor" meaning graves. The mosque has been named so as it houses the graves of Hazrat Sultan Shamsuddin Badhusha and Hazrat Sultan Alauddin Badusha, the two well known Islam monarchs and saints of Madurai. The 2 brothers upon returning from Oman began ruling the northern side of Madurai in the 13th century. They together helped in spreading Islam in Madurai. The Hazrat Qazi Syed Tajuddin Radiyallah located on the Kazimar Street served as the government Qazi for them.
Architecture of Goripalayam Mosque
The dome that embellishes the mosque is almost 20 feet in height and 70 feet in diameter. It has been constructed of a single block of stone that had been imported from the Azhaga Hills. The exterior part of the campus of the Maqbara depicts inscriptions of ancient Tamil. These inscriptions confirm the presence of Dargah since 13th century. The magnificent Goripalayam Dargah is visible from the A.V. Bridge. It has been erected towards the northern side of the banks of Vaigai River.
