Gopal Krishna Gandhi was the Governor of West Bengal. He has been in this position from 2004 to 2009. He has held many important administrative posts during his career and was also chosen as the Ambassador and High Commissioner of India in several countries. Other than his own credit, he has another identity of being the youngest grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was his maternal grandfather.

Early life of Gopalkrishna Gandhi
Gopalkrishna Gandhi was born on 22 April 1945 to Devdas Gandhi and Laxmiben Gandhi. Gandhi is the youngest amongst 3 other siblings, late Ramchandra Gandhi, Rajmohan Gandhi and Smt.Tara Bhattacharjee (Gandhi). Gopalkrishna Gandhi completed his Masters in English Literature from St. Stephen`s College under Delhi University.

Political Career of Gopalkrishna Gandhi
In 1968, Gopalkrishna Gandhi joined the Indian Administrative Service and held positions in different capacities in Tamil Nadu. From 1985 to 1987, he was Secretary to the Vice President of India and from 1987 to 1992 he has served the post of Joint Secretary to the President of India. In 1992, Gandhi took voluntary retirement from the IAS. After that he took up the position of Minister (Culture) in the High Commission of India, U.K., and became the Director of the Nehru Centre, London.

In 1996, Gandhi was appointed as the High Commissioner for India in South Africa. At the same time he was attributed as the High Commissioner for India in Lesotho. In 1997, he took up the position of the Secretary to the President of India. In the year 2000, he was appointed as the High Commissioner for India in Sri Lanka and the Ambassador of India in Norway in 2002. He was concomitantly endorsed as the Ambassador of India in Iceland. On 14 December 2004, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam appointed Gandhi as the Governor of West Bengal and his term ended in the year 2009. He took up the additional charge in 2006, as the Governor of Bihar. On March 5, 2012 he was appointed as the chairman of governing body of Indian Institute of Advanced Study, as well as the president of its society.

Gandhi has authored one novel, named Saranam, and one play, titled Dara Shikoh. He has written several other books as well, like Koi Acchha Sa Ladka, a translation of Vikram Seth`s A Suitable Boy; Gandhi and South Africa, Nehru and Sri Lanka, Gandhi and Sri Lanka, Gandhi Is Gone, India House, A Frank Friendship/ Gandhi and Bengal, Colombo- Portrait of a Residence and others.

Personal Life of Gopalkrishna Gandhi
Shri Gandhi married to Smt. Tara Gandhi and the couple has two daughters who are now married and well settled.
