Gondia is a small city situated in the Gondia district of the western state of India, Maharastra. It is the district headquarters of the Gondia district and is situated in the northeast of Nagpur at a distance of 150 km. The nearest airport is the Sonegaon Airport at Nagpur and the nearest railhead is the Gondia Junction Railway station which keeps the city connected with the other places.

The city has a number of rice mills because agriculture is the main occupation of the people living here and the main crop cultivated here is paddy. Therefore the city is also popularly called the Rice city. Wainganga is an important river flowing through Gondia. The city also has tobacco industries and all this make it a major commercial center in the Nagpur region.

As of the 2001 India census report, Gondia had a population of 120,878 inhabitants. Males constitute 515 of the population and females comprises of 49% of the population. In Gondia, 12% of the population is less than six years of age. The average literacy rate of the town is 79%, which is much higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 84% and the female literacy rate is 74%.
