Godiji Teerth located in the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra is a Jain pilgrimage centre. The temple is dedicated to Lord Parshavanatha, the twenty-third Jain Tirthankara. The Lord is popularly known as Shri Godiji Parshvanath Bhagavan.
History of Godiji Teerth
According to history Godiji Teerth dates back to the ancient period. As per references this Jain temple is 178 years old. The flag of the temple was installed by Shri Motishah Sheth, a famous leader of the Jain religious order. He is credited with making vital contributions towards the construction of this temple. This sacred place is associated with many miracles and legends. According to one legend several years ago the idol of Parshvanatha was brought here by Shri Meghashah. It is said that he had dreamt about the exact location of the idol. He thus brought it from there. Since the idol was brought people began experiencing different types of miraculous incidents. Thus a temple was constructed and the idol was installed in Godi village in the desert-region of Tharparkar (now in Pakistan). It is said that as the idol became renowned as Godi Parshvanath it is installed in the Godiji temple. Earlier the temple was in Fort area of Mumbai. Once due to fire the idol was installed in Payadhuni in V.S. 1868. The idol of Bhagavan Parshvanatha is believed to possess miraculous powers. Devotees from far off places visit the temple to offer their prayers and get their wishes fulfilled.
Temple of Godiji Teerth
The Temple of Godiji Teerth houses the deity of Lord Parshvanatha. This exquisitely fine temple is situated in the Palyadhuni area of greater Mumbai. The temple has been magnificently decorated with intricate beautiful designs. The artistic temple work boast about the skills of the craftsmen. On the second floor an idol of Shri Chintamani Parshvanath Bhagavan was installed and thereafter the idol of Shri Sharmila Parshvanath Bhagavan was installed in a separate temple. The temple was completely renovated and was decorated with marble. It is adorned with tall magnificent pillars, stunning peak and dome. The Sangha of Shri Vijayadevasuri Gaccha looks after the administration of this Jina temple. Under their administration the temple has flourished greatly. Many annual gatherings and functions are organised by the temple authorities. Three birthdays of lord Parshvanatha are observed every year.
Godiji Teerth is surrounded by scenic beauty that enthrals the heart of the pilgrims. The pleasing environment of the kshetra gives a unique experience of spiritualism to the devotees.
