Gobind Sagar, Reservoir, Himachal PradeshGobind Sagar is a man-made reservoir on the Sutlej River. This dam is situated in Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh. This huge hydel dam at Bhakra has been named in honor of Guru Gobind Singh, who was the tenth Sikh guru.

Gobind Sagar is one of the world`s highest gravity dams, which rises nearly 225.5 m above its lowest foundations. Harvey Slocum, the American dam-builder supervised the construction of the Bhakra Dam. The construction work began in the year of 1955 and was completed in 1962. The flow of river Beas was channelized to Gobind Sagar by the Beas-Sutlej link in order to maintain the level of water. This Beas to Gobind Sagar channel was accomplished in 1976.

The Gobind Sagar reservoir lies in between the Bilaspur District and Una. Bilaspur lies about 83 km. away from the railway station at Anandpur Sahib, which is very close to the Bhakra Dam. When the water level of the reservoir is high in the months of October and November, the Tourism and Civil Aviation department organizes a series of regattas. Water-skiing, sailing, kayaking and water scooter racing are popular water sports activities enjoyed by the tourists visiting Gobind Sagar.

Gobind Sagar Dam was declared as a waterfowl refuge in 1962. Fishing is commonly practiced in this reservoir. There are about fifty-one species and sub species. Labeo dero, Tor pitutrata, Mystus seenghala and Mirror carp are some of the widespread species found in Gobind Sagar Dam. Major attractions of the lake are ferry rides and water sports like speed boating, pulling crowds rounds the year.
