Gautam Ghose is one of the most celebrated film directors of modern Indian cinematic arena. He was born in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal, in 1950. He is well-known for his art of making meaningful films. He has made films in both Hindi and Bengali language.
Early Life of Gautam Ghose
He studied at the St John`s Diocesan School (now an all girls school), and at the Cathedral Missionary Boy`s School. He graduated from University of Calcutta and then started out his career as a documentary film maker in 1973. He also took active interest in group theatre movement in Kolkata. He also dedicated some of his time in photo journalism as well. He made his first documentary- New Earth in 1973 and followed it up with Hungry Autumn which won an award at Oberhausen Film Festival.

Has made a number of well-known documentaries that includes Meeting A Milestone (on Ustad Bismillah Khan), Land of Sand Dunes, Beyond the Himalayas, Ray (On Satyajit Ray), Impermanence (On HH Dalai Lama) Made numerous AD films, corporate and other Short Films. He has won 16 National Awards besides Filmfare Awards and many International awards like Silver Balloon Award, Nantes Film Festival, UNESCO Award, Cannes Film Festival, and Grand Prix - Golden Semurg at Tashkent, UNESCO Award at Venice, Fipresci Awards, and Red Cross Award at Verna Film Festival. He is also the only Indian Film Director to win the coveted Vittori Di Sica Award, and he was awarded the Knighthood of the Star of the Italian Solidarity in July 2006.
