Galathea National Park is situated in the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It shelters a vast variety of flora and fauna including the rare ones. It is set precisely in the Great Nicobar Island, which is located in the eastern Indian Ocean. It was declared as a National Park of India in the year 1992 and spans over an area of about 110 square kilometres. Galathea National Park along with the larger Campbell Bay National Park constitutes the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. Both these national parks are separated from each other by an area of 12 kilometres, known as forest buffer zone. The lush greenery and mesmerizing views of sunset makes the place immensely inviting.

Bio-diversity of Galathea National Park
Galathea National Park is the home to rare and unique species of flora and fauna. Many of them are exclusively found here owing to the geographical conditions prevailing in the island. Several species of flora have grown thoroughly here since centuries. Flora of the region mostly comprises tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. Some of the rare fauna species of the park include Nicobar pigeon, Megapode and Giant Robber Crab. Apart from these, other species include Reticulated Python, Nicobar Tree Shrew, Malayan Box Turtle, Giant Leather-Back Sea Turtle, Saltwater Crocodile, Nicobar Long-Tailed Macaque, Edible Nest Swiftlet, Nicobar Scrub-Fowl and many others. Most of the species are found hidden deep in the jungles or in the surrounding lagoons.

The tribal population living around the region are quite conservative and have adopted various survival techniques which have evolved as a part of eco tourism. The secluded place has an exquisite natural beauty and forms a brilliant site for bird watching. Galathea National Park enjoys a warm and tropical climate with plenty of rainfall throughout the year. The average temperature of the region varies from 22-31 degree Celsius. Critical storms sometimes hit the place. End of the month of January marks the beginning of summer season which lasts up to the June end.

Visiting Information
The nearest and only airport to reach Galathea National Park is Port Blair airport which is connected to the cities of Kolkata and Chennai. From Port Blair, inter island boat is available which travels through Nancowry, Car Nicobar and Little Andaman to reach Galathea. The period between March to October forms the ideal time to visit Galathea National Park.
