Forts in Jammu and Kashmir are the various historical monuments which have been constructed by numerous rulers belonging to different dynasties. Even today, they serve as popular tourist destinations for national as well as international travellers and historians. Some of the significant forts of Jammu and Kashmir comprise Bhimgarh Fort, Bahu Fort, Hiranagar Fort and Hari Parbat Fort. Some of these forts lie in a dilapidated condition while others are still intact.

Bhimgarh Fort
Bhimgarh Fort is also known as `Reasi Fort` and was constructed by Maharaja Rishipal Rana who was the founder of Reasi. This fort is located at a distance of nearly 64 kms away from the north-western portion of Jammu and possesses a height of nearly 150 metres. It is based near the town of Reasi. Gulab Singh, the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir had started renovating the fort during the year 1817 and continued doing so till 1841.

Hari Parbat Fort
Hari Parbat Fort was also referred to as `Koh-e-Maraan` and is located in Srinagar. It had been created in the year 1808 and the initial fortification of the fort was initiated by Akbar, during the year 1590. He is also said to have added an outer wall boundary to the fort but this project was halted midway. During the regime of Shuja Shah Duranni, the current fort`s construction was eventually accomplished.

Bahu Fort
Raja Bahulochan had erected the Bahu Fort in the city of Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir over 3, 000 years ago. The fort was remodified during the 19th century by the Dogra kings. The Bave Wali Mata Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali is also existent in the grounds of Bahu Fort. The Hindu festival of `Bahu Mela` is celebrated inside the Bahu Fort with great pomp.
