The category was introduced in the following year of the commencement of Filmfare Awards, along with the Best Supporting Actor award in 1955.

Actresses Shashikala, Simi Garewal, Raakhee, Rohini Hattangadi, Aruna Irani and Konkona Sen Sharma have won this award twice, with Aruna Irani holding the maximum nominations under the category at 10. Actress Bindu has the most number of nominations without ever winning, with 7. The award was presented to Priyanka Chopra, for her outstanding and heart-warming portrayal of Kashibai, first wife of Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I, in "Bajirao Mastani". The character demanded a mature portrayal which Chopra fulfilled.
