The Filmfare Award for Best Background Score is given by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, recognising the music composer who conceptualises and crafts the original music score which most suitably accompany a running Hindi film released in the preceding year, in the background. This score forms part of the film`s soundtrack, which also usually includes dialogue and sound effects, and is composed in collaboration with the director of the film to give the running scenes of the film their required tone and ambience.
The category was introduced only in 1998 and music director Viju Shah was the first recipient of the award, recognised for the background score of the film "Gupt: The Hidden Truth", a suspense thriller released in 1997.
