Filmfare Award for Best Background ScoreThe Filmfare Award for Best Background Score is given by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, recognising the music composer who conceptualises and crafts the original music score which most suitably accompany a running Hindi film released in the preceding year, in the background. This score forms part of the film`s soundtrack, which also usually includes dialogue and sound effects, and is composed in collaboration with the director of the film to give the running scenes of the film their required tone and ambience.

The category was introduced only in 1998 and music director Viju Shah was the first recipient of the award, recognised for the background score of the film "Gupt: The Hidden Truth", a suspense thriller released in 1997.

Renowned composer A. R. Rahman is the most frequent winner of the Filmfare Award for Best Background Score, with 4 wins out of 19 awards conferred so far, followed by Amit Trivedi who has won 3 times. Composers Sandip Chowta and Ranjit Barot have won the award twice each.

Filmfare Award for Best Background Score at 61st Filmfare Awards
The 61st edition of Filmfare Awards held in January, 2016, conferred the Filmfare Award for Best Background Score to composer Anupam Roy, for the background score of the film "Piku", a comedy drama showcasing the story of a young responsible and temperamental daughter and her relationship with her ageing, grumpy and as temperamental father.
