The Filmfare Award for Best Actor is given by Filmfare, a tabloid monthly magazine in English on the Hindi film industry or Bollywood, in its annually held Filmfare Awards. This award recognises the performance of a male actor in a leading role in a film released in the preceding year. It is a coveted title amongst the Filmfare Awards categories and is presented to the actor who gives the most appreciable, noticeable or influential performance. It was first given in 1954 in the very inception of Filmfare Awards.

He is the oldest winner and nominee in this category and also has the most number of nominations in the same year (in 1979 and 1983) along with Shah Rukh Khan (in 2005), both with 3.
Actor and superstar Aamir Khan holds the maximum consecutive nominations of 9, from 1989 to 1997 and has won the award 2 times. His contemporary Salman Khan has been nominated for maximum number of times without ever having won with 9 nominations.
The youngest winner of the award is Rishi Kapoor who won at 21, for his performance in his debut film "Bobby" released in 1973. The youngest nominee is Darsheel Safary, who was nominated at the age of 11 for his performance of a dyslexic child in the 2007 released "Taare Zameen Par".

The illustrious list of nominees comprised Ranveer Singh for "Bajirao Mastani", Amitabh Bachchan for "Piku", Salman Khan for "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", Ranbir Kapoor for "Tamasha", Shah Rukh Khan for "Dilwale" and Varun Dhawan for "Badlapur".
