Fida Bai Markam was a Nacha exponent. She came from a family of hereditary performers of Dewar and Nacha in the village of Somni, in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. She started taking part in shows as a 10-year-old, and travelled through the region with Nacha troupes. Habib Tanvir spotted her talent and recruited her along with other Chhattisgarhi artists in his Naya Theatre. She acted memorably in his Charandas Chor in 1975, Bahadur Kalarin i.e. "Heroic Kalarin" in 1978. Some of the memorable characters were played as the courtesan Vasantasena in Mini kigadi i.e. "Clay Cart" in 1977, the rural version of Sudraka`s Mricchakatika, and the prostitute Shantibai in Sajapur ki Shantibai i.e. "Shantibai of Sajapur" in 1978. Fida Bai Markam acted in Shyam Benegal`s filmed documentation "Oi Charandas Chor" in 1975. She also recorded three albums of Chhattisgarhi folk songs.
