History of Fete De Puducherry
Coinciding with the liberation day, the Independence Day this festival rams home between August 15-17, ushering in the festive mood and whole of Puducherry is cast away by the folk art as well as classical artistic fever. Culturally a melting pot, this festival has a historical feature of cultural parade celebrated by the department of Art and Culture and the south zone cultural Centre. People gather with a mood of fun and frolic, occasionally throwing a major party amidst the sun kissed beaches and idyllic French township. While a large gamut of foreign tourist arrive and gather in this cultural fiesta, this festival even nurtures the traditional art forms.

Formation of a colony through various mechanisms of control and the various stages of anti-colonial nationalism has left its yellow traces throughout Puducherry, it being the capital of erstwhile French colony. Power relations between the colonizer and colonized has always led to the enrichment of cultural extravaganza of the latter, the post colonies. Formation of empires after colonial sweep, thus, murmurs its brisk notes within the confines of this city and plethora of festive junctures are coloured by the similar tinge. Indeed the festival is shadowed by the past of looking back. One remembers the observation of Greek poet Seferis: "the city is not in ruins, we are the ruins".
