Objective of Fergusson College
The main objective behind the establishment of Fergusson College was to bring about social reforms and as a potent instrument for national regeneration. The main aim of the college is to aspire and strive for excellence in education by developing and sharpening the intellectual and human potential of learners for the benefit of the society at large. Fergusson College strives to impart quality education through different traditional and innovative learning practices. History of Fergusson College
Fergusson College has a glorious history. The founders of the Fergusson College had first started the New English School, Pune in 1880 and later established the Deccan Education Society (DES) in the year 1884. It was followed by the bold step to start the first ever privately managed college in India, on 2nd of January 1885, naming it as Fergusson College. History of the college suggests that the name of the college was given in appreciation of the support of Sir James Fergusson, the then Governor of Mumbai. The college received affiliation of the University of Mumbai and began its onward march in higher education with the opening of the Arts classes, followed in 1892, with the science classes.
