Farrukhnagar Fort is a prominent attraction in Gurgaon district of Haryana. It was established by Faujdar Khan in the year 1732. He was the first Nawab of Farrukhnagar and a Governor to later Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar. The Farrukhnagar Fort was earlier a home to more than 4,000 people. It is also popularly known as "Dilli Darwaza".
History of Farrukhnagar Fort
Farrukhnagar Fort served as the entrance to Farrukhnagar Town. According to the history, Farrukhnagar was ruled by Baloch rulers – Faujdar Khan and later by Dalel Khan. Later, it was conquered by the Mughal Emperor. The town was famous for its salt trade till the British put a ban on it in the early 1900s.
Architecture of Farrukhnagar Fort
The Farrukhnagar Fort is in octagonal shape and it is the apt example of Mughal architecture. It was basically one of the entrance gates which led people to Farrukhnagar. The Fort originally had five gateways which are now reduced to just three. Entrance of the fort features "Dilli Darwaza", which is popularly called the "Delhi Gate". Out of the five entrances, this gateway is one of three surviving entrances to the town. "Patli Darwaza" and "Jhajjari Darwaza" are the remaining two gateways. The "Dilli Darwaza" was renovated in 2009 along with two other gateways, including the "Jhajjari Darwaza" and "Patli Darwaza".
Present Condition of Farrukhnagar Fort
Farrukhnagar Fort was mostly in ruins as the there was no proper care by the Government officials. Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, an NGO took charge over it and got it renovated in the year 2009. Today, it is well maintained and is considered as one among the best tourist places.
Visiting Information of Farrukhnagar Fort
The entire tour to Farrukhnagar Fort might take around 3 hours. The fort opens by 9.00 am and closes by 6.00 pm. It is open to the public in all the weekdays as well as weekends. The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport and the nearest railhead is the Taj Nagar Railway station. One can hire taxis from the airport and railway station to reach the Farrukhnagar Fort.
