Faridabad District, an administrative district of Haryana has its headquarters at Faridabad. Total area occupied by Faridabad District is 2151 sq kms. This district covers 4.86 percent of the total state land. Out of the total area of the state, only 55 sq km area is under forest, which is about 2.61 percent of the total geographical area of the district. The district has almost flat plains. Yamuna River flows on its entire eastern boundary. Faridabad, Ballabgarh, Palwal and Hodal are the mains towns of Faridabad District. This district has around six telephone exchanges and about 126 post offices.
Location of Faridabad District
Faridabad District is about 25 kms from Delhi in 28 degree 25 minutes 16 seconds north latitude and 77 degree 18 minutes 28 seconds east longitude. Faridabad District is bounded by Delhi on its north, Gurgaon District on the west, by Uttar Pradesh on its east and south. Yamuna River separates the district`s boundary on eastern side with Uttar Pradesh.
History of Faridabad District
Faridabad District was founded in 1607 AD by Sheikh Farid, treasurer of Jahangir, with the object of protecting the highway which passed through the town. Sheikh Farid built a fort, a tank and a mosque which are now in ruins. Later on, it became the headquarters of a Pargana which was held in jagir by Ballabgarh ruler. Faridabad District came into existence on 15th of August, 1979 as the 12th district of the state. Faridabad District was carved out from erstwhile Gurgaon District.
Demography of Faridabad District
As per 2001 Census, total population of Faridabad District is 21,93,276, which is around 10.40 percent of the total population of the state. Its density according to 2001 population census is 1020 persons per sq km against 372 in the state. It is the most densely populated district in the state.
Administration of Faridabad District
Faridabad comes under the Gurgaon Division of Haryana. Haryana is divided in four Divisions. Each division is headed by Divisional commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner is the administrative head of Faridabad District. Administration of Faridabad District is divided into four sub-divisions and each sub-division is headed by Sub Divisional Magistrates (SDM). Faridabad District has five Community Development Blocks located in four tehsils. It has 388 revenue villages of which 25 are uninhabited and 40 villages have been urbanised. The Municipal Corporation, Faridabad provides the urban civic amenities to the citizens of Faridabad city.
Economy of Faridabad District
Faridabad District is one of the popular industrial hubs of the country. There are now around 15,000 small, medium and large industries in this district providing direct and indirect employment to nearly half a million people and ranks 9th largest industrial estate in Asia. Many international and multinational companies like Whirlpool, Goodyear, Asia Brown Boveri, GKN Invel, Woodward Governor, Castrol besides Escorts, Eicher, Cutler 
Hammer, Hyderabad Asbestos, Nuchem are operating in this belt. Faridabad is famous for Heena Production on agriculture sector while tractors, motorcycles, switch gears, refrigerators and shoes are other famous industrial products of the city.
Badkhal Lake tourist complex, Suraj Kund Tourist Complex, Aravali Golf Club and Raja Nahar Singh Palace are the famous tourist spots of Faridabad District. Faridabad has a well connected network of road and electricity. Faridabad is well connected with other parts of the country by Rail and Road. The broad gauge railway line of Northern and North-Central Railways passes through the district and most of the trains going to South and West of the country passes through the district. Also Delhi-Mathura-Agra road NH-2 passes through the district.
