There are various fairs and festivals that are celebrated through out the whole year. All the people enjoy to their extent and have a great fun during the time of these festivals.
Some of the important festivals, which are celebrated, are as follows:
Craft`s Festival: This is celebrated during the month of December-January. This features the work of craftsmen from all over the country.
Ashtami Rohini: This is celebrated during the month of August-September. Vadayattukotta Temple celebrates 5 daylong Ashtami Rohini festivals. There are various amusements and festivities that are held in connection with festivals in temples in all these days. The people enjoy a lot at this time. Muharam is also observed in this month with processions at the town mosque.
Kerala tourism boat races: :This boat race is conducted on 19th January every year. This is to coincide with the great elephant march, which is held on 17-20 January.
Kollam Puram: This festival is celebrated in the month of April. This is a colorful 10-day long Vishnu festival, which takes place in Ashram temple. It also includes procession and fire works.
Kottamkulangara:
Kottamkulangara temple also known as Vilakkeduppu. In Kottamkulangara Temple in Chavara, there is a peculiar custom of men dressing up as women and carry lighted lamps i.e. Thalappoli. The Uriyadi is a typical festival associated with Krishna Temple. The annual Uriyadi festival held at Vadayattukotta temple in connection with Ashtami Rohini deserves mention. The Kettukazhcha festival usually held at Mahadevar Temple. Thrikkadavur, which is celebrated during the February-March every year, is one of the colorful festivals of the district. There are similar festivals in the temples of Sasthamcotta, Velinallur, Chathannur, Chirakkara etc.
Oachirakali:
This festival is celebrated in the month of June. The mock swork-fight Oachirakkali is one of the most important of such festivals. Oachira is one of the sacred places of Kerala. Historically also this place is very famous as because it was on the plains of Oachira that the much famed battle in the history of Travancore, which was the battle of Kayamkulam, was fought. It was fought between Marthandavarma, the Maharaja of Travancore and the Raja of Kayamkulam.
In memorial of this historic battle Ochirakkali is conducted on the first and second of Mithunam during June-July every year. On this occasion, the young and the old, drawn from the two Karas lying east and west of Oachira, from themselves into two groups, reach the Padanilam i.e. the place for fighting and conduct the age-old fencing exercise under the leadership of the elder kalari asan.
