Ettayapuram is a panchayat town in Thoothukudi district also known as Tuticorin district in the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. Ettayapuram was the erstwhile Ilasanadu, which was a part of the Pandya kingdom.
As of the 2001 census report, Ettayapuram had a population of 12,800 sq. km. Males constitute 48% of the population and females constitute 52% of the population. In Ettayapuram, 10% of the population is less than six years of age. Ettayapuram has an average literacy rate of 69%. This is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 78% while the female literacy rate is 61%.
The main occupation of the people living here includes agriculture, weaving, making matches. The soil type is black soil, which supports the cultivation of cotton, sunflower, cholam, cumbu(pearl millet) and kezhvaragu (finger millet).
Ettayapuram Palace, Umarup Pulavar Dargah Bharathiar and Mani Mandapam, built in the memory of Subramania Bharathiyar, are the main tourist attractions of this place. Ettayapuram is well connected to Madurai, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli by road. Other major attractions in the vicinity include Nellaiappar temple in Tirunelveli, Courtallam waterfalls near Tirunelveli and the Ayyanar Temple, Vangarpatti 5 km. from Ettayapuram.
