Electrical Music Instruments produces melodies on electronic technology. Such instruments were once found exclusively in the Western countries but later these emerged as common musical instruments in India also.

Amplifier is a common instrument which is used along with these instruments that amplifies the musical signals generated by them. Electrical Music Instruments differ greatly from electronic musical instruments which produces sounds only by electronic means. A huge variety of Electrical Music Instruments are found these days which add vigour to the Indian music.

Electric Piano
Electric Piano is one of the most popular Electrical Music Instruments. Initially these were better categorized as electro-mechanical instrument which converts mechanical sounds into electrical signals. The sound of electric piano varies greatly from acoustic instruments and has a distinct charm of its own. The models of electric piano had undergone several changes and modifications over time. These days, digital electronic pianos have become more popular owing to their compact size and versatility.

Electric Guitar
Electric Guitar is another Electric Music Instrument that converts the vibrations of the strings into electrical signals. The pickup used in playing the electric guitar work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. An amplifier is also required for this instrument as the signal derived from the instrument is too weak to drive the loudspeakers directly. This instrument is not only popular in pop music but also blends beautifully with other genres of music. Specific skills are required to produce exquisite melodies with electric guitar.

Electronic Organ
Electronic Organ is a keyboard instrument which has been derived from pipe organ, harmonium and theatre organ. It was originally designed to reproduce the sounds of theatre organs, pipe organs, orchestral sounds and band sounds.

Electronic Keyboard
Another well known Electrical Music Instrument is Electronic Keyboard. The melodies produced by the Electronic Keyboard are the result of pressing mechanical keys and production of sound by electrical circuitry. The components of Electronic Keyboard include a musical keyboard, user interface software, rhythm and chord generator, sound generator, amplifier and speaker. This instrument has also gone through various modifications through incorporation of new technologies.

Electric Sitar
Electric Sitar is similar to Electric Guitar which mimics the sound of Sitar, a traditional music instrument of India. The resemblance of this instrument with the traditional Sitar varies with different models of Electric Sitar. It is generally composed of six strings in addition to the sympathetic strings located on the left. Several versions of Electric Sitar were developed in India.

Electric Mandolin
Electric Mandolin reproduces the sound of Mandolin and is amplified in the same way as Electric Guitar. Many versions of Electric Mandolins are found including solid body mandolins, acoustic electric mandolins and semi-acoustic electric mandolins.

Electric Harp
Electric Harp is another electric instrument having acoustic origin. Different models of Electric Harp, namely solid-body and hollow body electro-acoustic, are found. Solid body electric harp comprises of pedal harps or lever harps. Pedal harps are generally expensive; however, electro-acoustic models of pedal harp are quite economical and can be played without amplification.

Electric Violin
Electric violin mimics the sound of a Violin with the help of an electronic output. The instrument usually has a solid body with built in electric pickup. The electrical signals generated by the Electric Violin passes through electronic processing which helps to produce the desired sound. This processing is similar to that used in Electric Guitar. The components of electric processing include distortion, reverb and chorus. Electric Violins are widely used in traditional as well as contemporary classical music. It is also common among other genres of music such as rock, hip hop, metal, jazz and experimental music.

Electrical Music Instruments have popularised the music greatly among the common people. Many of them create their own melodies and rhythms while many replicate the sounds of traditional music instruments. Owing to their ease of use, these instruments have acquired a distinguished position in musical concerts as well as recordings.
