Kalpana Chawla is an Indian-American astronaut, who was the first Indian woman in space. She was one of the seven astronauts, who lost their lives in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on 1st February 2003. Chawla completed her early education in Karnal District of Haryana from Tagore school in the year 1976. After that, she obtained a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Later, she moved to the United States in 1982. There she obtained the degree of Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Then, she earned a second Masters Degree in 1986 and a Doctorate Degree in Aerospace Engineering in the year 1988 from the University of Colorado Boulder. Kalpana Chawla was posthumously honoured with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA Space Flight Medal and NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
