Education of UttarakhandEducation of Uttarakhand shows 72.28% total literacy, where the percentage of male literacy is 84.01% and female is 60.26%. The Uttarkand board of school educations and exams are working under the umbrella of Directorate of School Education. In Uttarakhand, the department of education has an amalgamated structure which has under it the basic education, secondary education, state council of education research and training. A scheme for universalizing elementary education, SSA and literacy mission are under Uttarakhand Sabhi Ke Liye Shiksha Parishad. School education is the biggest department in Uttarakhand with around one lakhs of employees.

The educational institutions of Uttarakhand are an asset to India and the world. One of the oldest engineering colleges of the country, the Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee, is at G.B.Pant University, Uttarakhand. Other universities of prime importance are the G. B. Pant University in Pantnagar, Kumaun University in Nainital and Almora, and the H.N.B. Garhwal University in Srinagar.

The literacy rate of Uttarakhand is higher than the national literacy rate. The government of Uttarakhand is trying to explore every opportunity to extend education to every nook and corner of the state. Providing Computer Education to the secondary schools and midday meal schemes to the primary school is one of the schemes run by state School Education Department. The schools are providing midday meals in order to attract more and more students to school as a result there won`t be any drop outs from schools. The schools not only give importance in imparting curricular education but also in providing co-curricular education, as education is the all round development of an individual.

Uttarakhand State has introduced free and quality education for the talented students in the rural areas, who can not afford to study, through the Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya residential schools. There are seven Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalayas, started in the seven districts of Uttarakhand.
