Education of Ernakulum DistrictThere are adequate facilities for child education starting from Pre-primary level to Post graduate level. Different types of professional and technical education also got prominence in this district.

On 10th July 197, Cochin University established which provides ample facilities for advanced studies and research in pure and applied science. It also developed social sciences and humanities like applied economics, management studies, law, commerce and banking etc. At Thrikkakara, there is 180-acre campus for the university. Similarly it has a like side campus at Kochi also. However a new campus with an engineering college and College of Computer applications has been established under the aegis of the University at Pulinkunnu, Kuttanad, Alappuzha. In the lake side campus located in Ernakulam the Schools of Marine Sciences, Environmental studies, industrial fisheries and a men`s hostel are there.

In 1993 the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, named Kalady was established by an ordinance. It was later incorporated as Act 5 of 1994. The University located in the birthplace of Sree Sankaracharya who was interested to pursue teaching and research in Sanskrit, Indology, Indian Philosophy, Indian languages, Fine Arts, Foreign languages and Social Sciences. The University is currently functioning in eight centres, which are named as Thiruvananthapuram, Thuravur, Ettumanoor, Kalady, Trissur, Tirur, Koilandy and Payyannur.

Majority of Arts and Science Colleges of the district are affiliated to the M.G. University, Kottayam.

Including Ernakulam general Hospital twenty-two other well maintained Hospitals under Govt. sector are functioning in this District. The number of community Health centers are ten, Block Public Health centers are twelve, Mini PHCs are sixty-five, and dispensaries are four. The District T B Center is situated at Palluruthy. School of Nursing is one, Regional Public Health Lab is one at Ernakulam and Regional analytical Lab for Food is one, which is situated at Kakkanad. Govt, J.P. Health Nursing training School is situated at Tripunithura while Chief Food Inspector mobile Unit is at Kakkanad.

The homeopathy is also very famous in Ernakulum district. The Homeo Hospitals are three, Homeo Dispensaries are fifty-one, Ayurveda Hospitals are thirteen and Ayurveda Dispensaries are sixty-one.

There are three Medical Colleges present in the district Ernakulum v.i.z. Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences in Private sector, Kochi Co-operative Medical College in Co-operative Sector and Kolenchery Medical College in Private Sector.
