The college is located in the village of Karakonam in Trivandrum District of Kerala and it is owned by the South Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India (SIUC). The South Kerala Medical Mission is currently in charge of running and managing the college. The college is working as a self financing, minority institution and it is affiliated to the University of Kerala, at the moment.

Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram started functioning with a view to achieve certain aims and objectives. The main objective of the college is to produce highly competent medical graduates and postgraduates, who would possess a high standard of professional skill. The college is trying to build its students as precious assets of India and it is also committed to create in the campus the best possible atmosphere and infrastructure for quality medical education. The college is striving hard to instil its students with a spirit of sacrifice, compassion for the poor, love that knows no limits, and utmost humility in service.

There is also a well equipped and highly developed hospital situated adjacent to the medical college and the hospital was established in 1894, as a small dispensary. By the course of time, the hospital has grown up as a multi-speciality hospital, with the most rapid growth being done during the past 17 years. The 500-bedded hospital has a large number of departments that are helping in providing quality education to the people of Kerala.
