Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as the fifth chief minister of Uttarakhand 2009 to 2011. He is a is a journalist by profession.
Early Life of Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was born on 15th August, 1958, in the Pauri Garhwal district of Garhwal Himalayas in the village of Pinani. His parents were Parmanand Pokhriya and Vishambhari Devi. He belonged to a poor family but was very intelligent since childhood. Extensive social work, reading and writing formed an integral part of his life.
Political Career of Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was elected as a M.L.A. to the Vidhan Sabha of Uttar Pradesh from the Karnaprayag constituency in the year 1991. In the year 1993 and 1996, Nishank was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha from the Karnaprayag constituency. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank became the Minister for Uttaranchal Development in the Uttar Pradesh state government in 1997. In 2002 he lost the Uttaranchal Vidhan Sabha election from Thalisain constituency but he was elected from the same constituency to the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha in 2007.
During the creation of Uttaranchal, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank became the minister of Uttaranchal under the Uttar Pradesh government. Prior to this, he had been the Cabinet Minister in the ministry of health, family welfare, language, science and technology. On June 27th 2009, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank took oath as the fifth chief minister of Uttarakhand. However, on 11th September 2011, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was dismissed from the position by the BJP`s central committee, due to corruption charges. B.C. Khanduri was appointed as the new chief minister.
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal `Nishank` also wrote many poems and the first collection of his poems was published in the year 1983.
