Punjab is a fertile land and is home for India`s wheat production. It is famous for its handicraft products. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people and it forms the backbone of the economy. The rich culture of the state is best reflected in its folklore, ballads of love and war, fairs and festivals, dance, music and literature.
The twenty-two different districts of Punjab are listed below:
Amritsar District
This district with its headquarters at Amritsar is spread over an area of 5,075 sq. km. The main attraction of the district is the Golden Temple at Amritsar, which is an important religious destination of the Sikhs.
Faridkot District
This district, spread over an area of 1,472 sq. km has its headquarters at Faridkot. The Faridkot Fort and the dera of Baba Farid are the main places of historical importance.
Fatehgarh Sahib District
This district of Punjab is well known for its handicrafts and handlooms, traditional embroidery, lacquer woodwork, furniture, footwear, carpets, jewellery, woollens and blankets.
Ferozepur District
This district of Punjab is located on the Indo Pakistan border and is known for its cotton and wool woven products.
Fazilka District
Located next to the border of West Pakistan, the Fazilka district is one of the new and twenty-two districts in the state of Punjab. The district has 314 revenue villages and the Sutlej River flowed through it. The Fazilka district was created by partition of the Firozpur district and the district"s largest city is Abohar.
Gurdaspur District
The district of Gurdaspur is spread over an area of 3,570 sq. km. Two important industrial towns of Maharashtra, Batala and Dhariwal are located here, which manufacture machine tools and woollen products.
Hosiarpur District
This particular district has a cool and humid climate, which favours the cultivation of rice. Cotton fabrics are also manufactured here.
Jalandhar District
The district of Jalandhar is an important district of the state and manufactures sports goods. The district headquarters at Jalandhar is located between the Beas, and the Sutlej.
Kapurthala District
The district of Kapurthala in Punjab is well known for hand-painted cloths and metalwork of Phagwara.
Ludhiana District
The Ludhiana district is spread over an area of 3,762 sq. km. and is a part of the Malwa region of Punjab.
Mansa District
The major attraction of Mansa district is the Samadhi of Bhai Gurdas, where a large fair is held every year in the month of March or April.
Moga District
This district of Punjab was carved out of Faridkot district and is a religious destination.
Muktsar District
The district of Muktsar is a famous religious destination. Spread over an area of 1,258 sq. km. Nawan Shehar district of Punjab has its headquarters at Nawan Shehar.
Patiala District
This is a popular district, situated in the south-eastern part of Punjab.
Rupnagar District
Formerly known as Ropar or Rupar, the Rupnagar district of Punjab is dotted with important gurduwaras and temples.
Sangrur District
This district is located in the southern part of Punjab spread over an area of 5,021 sq. km. The main cities of the district are Barnala, Dhuri, Malerkotla and Sunam.
Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District
This particular district of Punjab is a recent inclusion among the twenty-two districts. It was created in 2006 and is sub-divided among many blocks.
Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar District
This is one of the popular districts in Punjab and has two sub-divisions; Balachaur and Nawanshahr. Apart from that there are also three legislative seats in this particular district as well, namely Banga, Balachaur and Nawanshahr.
Tarn Taran District
This district of Punjab in North-West Republic of India is a popular spot among tourists. This place attracts religious people round the year.
Bhatinda District
The district of Bathinda is in Punjab and covers an area of 3344 square kilometres. It has its borders with Faridkot District on the north, state of Haryana in the south, Mukatsar District on the west, Barnala and Mansa District on the east.
Barnala District
This is a district which is part of Punjab. Previously this district was part of Sangrur District. But now Baranala has a separate entity. This Barnala district is centrally located and bordered by Moga District in North West, Ludhiana District on the North, Bathinda District on the West and Sangrur District on all the other sides.
Pathankot District
The Pathankot district shares international border with the Narowal district of Pakistani Punjab. The Ravi and Beas River passes through the Pathankot district and was created on 27th July, 2011.
