Districts of Meghalaya are home for many tribal peoples of the country. The state of Meghalaya, which is tucked away in the hills of eastern sub-Himalayan region, is one of the most beautiful states in the country. It is bounded on the north by Goalpara, Kamrup and Nagaon District, on the east by Karbi Anglong District and North Cachar Hills District of Assam, and on the south and west by neighbouring country Bangladesh. Meghalaya is the homeland mainly of Khasi Tribe, Jaintias and Garo tribe. The Garos inhabit western Meghalaya, the Khasis in central Meghalaya, and the Jaintias in eastern Meghalaya.

There are a total of Seven Districts in Meghalaya, They are
* East Khasi Hills, Shillong
* West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin
* Ri-Bhoi District, Nongpoh
* Jaintia Hills, Jowai
* East Garo Hills, Williamnagar
* West Garo Hills, Tura
* South Garo Hills, Baghmara

These seven districts of Meghalaya are further divided into sub-divisions and blocks. There are a total of eight sub-divisions and 39 blocks in Meghalaya. The Deputy Commissioner is the head of the district administration. The Deputy Commissioner is the executive head as well as judicial head of the district. He is aided by a number of officers like Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sub-Divisional Officers of Civil Sub-Divisions and Extra Assistant Commissioners. There is a Deputy Commissioner in each district. He is directly responsible for law and order, revenue matters, land records, supply, excise, registration, treasury, relief and any other matter not specifically allotted to other district officers in the district.

The seven districts of Meghalaya are as follows -
East Garo Hills District: East Garo Hills District is one of the seven administrative districts of Meghalaya with its headquarters located at Williamnagar. East Garo Hills District was upgraded from a sub-division to a full fledged district in the year 1976.

East Khasi Hills District: East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya has its administrative headquarters at Shillong. Khasi Hills District was bifurcated into two separate districts namely East Khasi Hills District and West Khasi Hills District in the year 1976.

Jaintia Hills District: Jaintia Hills District is one the seven districts of Meghalaya and its administrative headquarters are located at Jowai. This district was formed in the year 1972. Jaintia Hills District is one of the major producers of coal within the state.

Ri-Bhoi District: Ri-Bhoi District of Meghalaya has the district headquarters at Nongpoh. The district was upgraded to a full fledged district in the year 1992. Ri-Bhoi District was carved out from former East Khasi Hills District.

South Garo Hills District: South Garo Hills District is one of the seven districts of Meghalaya. It has its administrative headquarters at Baghmara. South Garo Hills District is located in the southern part of the state and it was created in the year 1992.

West Garo Hills District: West Garo Hills District, an administrative district of Meghalaya, is located in the westernmost part of the State of Meghalaya. The district administrative headquarters are located at Tura.

West Khasi Hills District: West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya lies in the central part of the state. It has its administrative headquarters located at Nongstoin. This administrative district of Meghalaya is mainly inhabited by Khasi tribe.
