Districts of Madhya Pradesh are altogether 50 in number. Various tribal communities largely dominate the districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Districts of Madhya PradeshThere are 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. Each district of Madhya Pradesh is headed by a Deputy Commissioner. He is responsible for the overall functioning of the district administration properly. In a particular district, the Deputy Commissioner also functions as District Magistrate and Collector. A Deputy Commissioner is the executive head who is also responsible for maintaining law and order in the district. As Chief Revenue Officer, his main function is related with revenue collection and recovery. Further, police administration of any district is also under the charge of Superintendent of Police.

Madhya Pradesh is the second biggest state in the country and is dominated by the tribals. The state has a rich cultural heritage, which is manifested, in numerous monuments, forts and palaces scattered all over the state. It is an ideal tourist destination with its dense forests, lofty hills and meandering rivers. Electronics, telecommunications, petrochemicals, food processing, and automobiles are the major industries of this state. Madhya Pradesh is noted for its handicrafts and handlooms.

Districts of Madhya Pradesh are further divided into several sub-divisions, development blocks and tehsils in order to decentralise the administrative authority. Brief information about the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh is given below.

Anuppur District: Anuppur District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. This district is situated in the north eastern part of the state with its headquarters at Anuppur. Anuppur District was formed in the year 2003 by carving out of Shahdol District and presently it forms a part of Rewa Division.

Alirajpur District: The Princely State of Ali Rajpur is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Alirajpur town. Alirajpur District was formed on 17th May, 2008 by carving out of Jhabua district.

Ashoknagar District: Ashoknagar District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh. This district is located on the north-eastern region of Malwa plateau. Ashoknagar District came into being on 15th of August, 2003. It was carved out of Guna District. Ashoknagar city is the district administrative headquarters.

Balaghat District: Balaghat District occupies the southernmost part of Jabalpur division. This administrative district of Madhya Pradesh is actually located in the south eastern region of Satpura mountain range. It has its headquarters located at Balaghat town.

Barwani District: Barwani District of Madhya Pradesh is located in the southern region of the state. This district was formed in the year 1998 by carving out of West-Nimar district. Barwani is the district headquarters. During the British rule it was a generous state. Barwani District has two sub-divisions namely Barwani and Sendhawa.

Betul District: Betul District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and is located in its southern part. Betul District covers the entire width of Satpura mountain range. This district has its headquarters located at Betul town.

Bhind District: Bhind District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters at Bhind. This district is one among those 16 districts of the United States of Madhya Bharat. After the reorganisation of these states, Bhind District became a part of the new formed state of Madhya Pradesh. Bhind District is located in Chambal region.

Bhopal District: Bhopal District is one of the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal, the capital city of the state is the district headquarters. Bhopal is a modern city that is known for its scenic beauty, urban planning and historic charm.

Burhanpur District: Burhanpur District was declared as an independent district on 15th of August, 2003. This District was carved out of East Nimar District. It has its headquarters situated at Burhanpur town. Burhanpur District is located in Tapti valley. This district has two development blocks namely Burhanpur and Khaknar, and it constitutes a part of Indore Division.

Chhatarpur District: Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh is located in the north-eastern border of the state forming a part of Sagar Division. Chhatarpur town is the district administrative headquarters. The district derived its name from the name of the great warrior king Maharaja Chhatrasa. Chhatarpur District is well known for wonderful Khajuraho temples.

Chhindwara District: Chhindwara District of Madhya Pradesh is situated in the south-west region of Satpura hill range. The district has its headquarters located at Chhindwara town. Chhindwara District forms a part of Jabalpur Division. Chhindwara District is divided into 11 development blocks and nine tehsils.

Damoh District: Damoh District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. Damoh town is the district administrative headquarters and forms a part of Sagar Division.

Datia District: Datia District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and has its headquarters located at Datia town. Datia District is a part of Gwalior Division.

Dewas District: Dewas District in Madhya Pradesh forms a part of Ujjain Revenue Division. This district is situated in the west central part of the state mainly on the Malwa plateau. Dewas town is the district headquarters and the district derives its name from this town.

Dhar District: Dhar District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and has its headquarters located at historic Dhar town. Dhar District forms a part of Indore Division.

Dindori District: Dindori District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh. This district is located in the eastern region of the state bordering Chhattisgarh. Dindori town is the district headquarters. Dindori District forms a part of Jabalpur division.

Guna District: Guna District is one of the administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and is considered as the gateway of Malwa and Chambal. Guna District lies in the north-eastern division of Malwa plateau. Guna town is the district headquarters.

Gwalior District: Gwalior District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh and forms a part of Gwalior division. Gwalior District consists of two sub-divisions, namely, Gwalior and Dabra. Gwalior is the district headquarters.

Harda District: Harda District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. Harda town is the district headquarters. Harda District came into existence in the year 1998 by carving out of Hoshangabad District. Harda District forms a part of Bhopal Division.

Hoshangabad District: Hoshangabad District of Madhya Pradesh is located in the central Narmada Valley. Hoshangabad District derives its name from Hoshangabad town, the district headquarters. Narmada River creates the district`s northern boundary.

Indore District: Indore District is one of the important administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. Indore city is the district administrative headquarters located on Malwa plateau. This city is the largest city in the state and Indore District derived its name from this town. Indore District forms a part of Indore Division.

Jabalpur District: Jabalpur District is a centrally positioned district of Madhya Pradesh. Jabalpur, the district headquarters, is an important city of Madhya Pradesh.

Jhabua District: Jhabua District is one of the administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. It is a western-most district of the state with Jhabua town as its headquarters. Jhabua District is predominantly a tribal district.

Katni District: Katni District is situated in the north eastern region of Madhya Pradesh. Katni town is the district headquarters. Katni District is a big producer of marble stones and it forms a part of Jabalpur Division.

Khandwa District: Khandwa District is located in the south eastern region of Madhya Pradesh. This district was formerly known as East Nimar District. Khandwa city is the administrative headquarters.

Khargone District: Khargone District was formerly known as West Nimar District. This administrative district of Madhya Pradesh forms a part of Indore division. Khargone town is the district headquarters.

Mandla District: Mandla District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. This district is positioned in east-central part of the state. Mandla town is the district headquarters. Mandla District constitutes a part of Jabalpur division. This is mainly a tribal district.

Mandsaur District: Mandsaur District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with rich historical heritages. Mandsaur town is the district headquarters and it forms a part of Ujjain Division.

Morena District: Morena District is one of the 50 administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. This district is situated in the state`s northern region. Morena District forms a portion of Chambal division. Morena town is the district as well as divisional headquarters. This district attained the status of an independent district in the year 1956.

Neemuch District: Neemuch District was formed by carving out of former Mandsaur district in the year 1998. Neemuch town is the district headquarters and this place is popularly called as the place of origin of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Narsinghpur District: Narsinghpur District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Narsinghpur. Narsinghpur District forms a part of Jabalpur Division.

Panna District: Panna District of Madhya Pradesh is situated in its north-eastern part. Panna town is the district headquarters. Panna District constitutes the northern part of Sagar division.

Raisen District: Raisen District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Raisen town. This district is situated in the central zone of the state. Raisen District forms a part of Bhopal Division.

Rajgarh District: Rajgarh District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh and is situated in the western zone of the state. Rajgarh District is a small district of the state in terms of population and area. Rajgarh town is the district headquarters. Rajgarh District was formed in the year 1948.

Ratlam District: Ratlam District is one of the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Ratlam town is the district headquarters. Ratlam District is located in the north-western part of the state in the Malwa region. It forms a part of Ujjain Division.

Rewa District: Rewa District is an important district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Rewa town. This district constitutes a portion of Rewa division. Rewa District derives its name from the headquarters town. This region is also known as the land of white tigers.

Sagar District: Sagar District is one of the administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh. Sagar town is the district headquarters. Sagar district is positioned in the north central part of the state.

Satna District: Satna District of Madhya Pradesh derives its name from its headquarters town Satna. Satna District constitutes a part of Rewa division.

Sehore District: Sehore District is one of the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Sehore town. Sehore District forms a part of Bhopal Division.

Seoni District: Seoni District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh with its headquarters located at Seoni town. Seoni District forms a part of Jabalpur Division.

Singrauli District: Singrauli District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh well known for its coal mines. This district was formed on 24th May, 2008 from Sidhi District. Singrauli District has its headquarters located at Waidhan town.

Shahdol District: Shahdol District is one of the administrative districts of Madhya Pradesh and is positioned in the north-eastern portion of Deccan Plateau. Shahdol District is basically a hilly district of the state. Shahdol town is district administrative headquarters. Shahdol District constitutes a part of Rewa Division.

Shajapur District: Shajapur District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh and has its headquarters situated at Shajapur town. Shajapur District is located in the northwestern portion of the state and is a part of Malwa Plateau. Shajapur District was declared a separate district in the year 1956.

Sheopur District: Sheopur District of Madhya Pradesh is situated towards the northern region of the state. Sheopur town is the district headquarters. This district forms a part of Chambal division.

Shivpuri District: Shivpuri District of Madhya Pradesh has its headquarters located at Shivpuri town. The name of Shivpuri district has originated from the name of Lord Shiva.

Sidhi District: Sidhi District is one of the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh. This district has its headquarters situated at Sidhi town. Sidhi district constitutes a part of Rewa division. Sidhi District has abundance of natural resources.

Tikamgarh District: Tikamgarh District of Madhya Pradesh is positioned in the north of the state. The district forms north-western portion of Sagar District. Tikamgarh District actually lies on Bundelkhand Plateau. It has its headquarters located at Tikamgarh town and forms a part of Sagar Division.

Ujjain District: Ujjain District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh and is located on Malwa Plateau. Ujjain District forms a portion of Ujjain Division. Ujjain is the district headquarters and it is a historically rich district.

Umaria District: Umaria District is an administrative district of Madhya Pradesh. Umaria District is the north eastern most district of the state. Umaria town is the district headquarters and this district forms a part of Shahdol Division.

Vidisha District: Vidisha District is one of the 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh. It has its headquarters situated at Vidisha town. Vidisha District was formed in the year 1904.
