Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra located in Kundalgiri (Koniji), in Madhya Pradesh is a Jain pilgrimage centre. It is an Atishaya Kshetra i.e. Place of Miracles. The temple is situated near Hiran River in the valleys of Bhander-Kemor mountain range, the Vindhyachal mountain range in Jabalpur District of Madhya Pradesh.
History of Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra
According to the history of Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra, this place is almost 1000 years ancient. The place is scattered with the ruins and fragments of Jain temples. They are so much in quantity that it becomes impossible to detect the number of temples that were once present here. It is said that in the year 1934, 13 temples existed here. However, by the year 1944 only 9 temples were left. In a particular complex 10 temples were constructed and one was built on a hill in the north direction.
According to a story of this Kshetra few years ago Gods of heaven used to come to this place during the `Ashtanhika Festival.` They used to offer their prayers and showers of saffron on this occasion. During this time the temple and the whole environment used to get filled with the fragrance of saffron. It is said that the temple has 2 ventilators and 2 gates and one feels cool in summers and warm during winters.
Temple of Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra
The temple of Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra is very ancient and has been magnificently carved with beautiful artistic designs. The temple depicts the
Kalchuri Periodic Art of 10th-11th century. Even the idols bear resemblance to that period of architecture and designs. Thus the temple could restore the ancient art and architecture of the ancient period. There are altogether 10 temples in a single compound. They were adorned with high spires. The idols that are installed in the temple belonged to 10th-11th century. Among the 10 temples the 8th temple is the main temple dedicated to Lord Parshavanatha surmounted by seven serpent hoods. The idol is 4 feet in height and seated in a Padmasana posture. It is carved of white stone. The idol was also called as `Vighnahar Parshvanatha`.
The Sahastrakoot Jinalaya that can be seen here is a unique piece of art. The temple has been embellished with superb architectural work. It exists in the 7th temple of this Kshetra which is famous as Sanctum Temple i.e. the Garbha Mandir. All the 8 Panels are carved on octagon shaped platform. The Nandishwar Dweep that boasts of magnificent artistic style of carving has been installed in the 10th temple. The carvings of these temples mesmerize the pilgrims and make them exclusive. Apart from these there are many other temples located here. Under the inspiration of Acharya Vidya Sagar Ji a splendid Trimurti temple was constructed here. It is second temple located here. The temple houses the idols of Bhagwan Rishabh Dev, Lord Bharat and Lord Bahubali. All the idols are 7 feet in height.
The first temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavira while the third temple houses the idol of Bhagwan Bahubali. In fourth temple the idol of Lord Shantinath and Lord Chandraprabha has been installed. The fifth temple houses Lord Adinath and in the sixth temple the idol of Lord Parshvanatha can be seen. In ninth temple the Chaubeesee carvings on stone slab is installed. The 11th temple is situated on hill in the northern direction of this Kshetra.
Shri Digambar Jain Kshetra is situated in the midst of natural surroundings on a hilly area on the banks of Hiran River. It is enclosed by scenic beauty that mesmerizes the pilgrims visiting the temple. The Chaaritra Chakravarti Acharya Shanti Sagar Ji Sasangh and Mahamanishi Sant `Shullak Ganesh Prasad Ji Varni` are also impressed by the calm and serene environment of this Teerth Kshetra. The temple organises annual gatherings. The `Maha Mastakabhishek` Festival is organized every year after `Dashlakshan Parva` (Festival). It has provisions for dharamshalas or rest houses for the pilgrims. There are 4 dharmashalas that are well equipped with all the modern facilities.
Shri Digambara Jain Kshetra is well connected by road, rail and air. The buses are available for all the places for the bus stand situated at distance of 1 km from the Kshetra. Buses and Taxis are available from Jabalpur, Damoh and Patan to Kshetra. The Jabalpur Railway Station or Damoh Railway Station is located nearby. The nearest airport is located at Dumna that is 40 km away.
