Dibyendu Barua, a chess Grandmaster who hails from the city of Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. In the year 1978, when he was only 12 years old, he participated as the youngest participant in the Indian National Championship of chess. The chess lovers acclaimed this emergence of a chess prodigy. In the year 1982, still in his teens, the world number two GM Viktor Korchnoi was defeated by him in London. Thus he won his maiden national championship.

Dibyendu Barua, the second Indian Grandmaster was born on October 27 in the year 1966. Barua has delivered notable achievements over the years. It took him nine long years after becoming an International Master, to earn the Grandmaster title in 1991.

In the 2nd board in Chess Olympiad held in the year1990, Dibyendu Barua won Gold Medal. He is married to Woman International Master Saheli Dhar.

Barua has won the national title thrice. The latest being in 2001. At that time he beat a tough field of four Grandmasters and a horde of talented youngsters. He has played 290 games according to the chessgames database.

The most notable games, which he has played, are in the year 1982 against Korchnoi, in the year 1996 against Spangenberg and in the year 1991 against M Basman.
