Dhumraketu refers to a flame of smoke, which is always expected to rise before Lord Ganesha. This divine flame of smoke is needed to be burnt before the Elephant God incessantly.

This divine smoke or ash provides accurate form to the thoughts and ideas of an individual and flutters like a flag in the atmosphere. Thus the Lord is called Dhumraketu. The second meaning conveys that as a fierce power or Agni (Fire), Lord Ganesha eliminates all ills, disasters and obstructions that appear in the spiritual and technological development of mankind.
