Located on the Narmada River, the Dhuandhar Falls stands at an elevation of 30 m in Bhedaghat. This waterfall in Jabalpur district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is a popular tourist attraction and is thronged by people especially during Sharad Purnima, when the Narmada Mahotsav is celebrated.
The Dhuandhar Falls is formed with the Narmada River making its way through the Marble Rocks, narrows down and then plunges in as the Dhuandhar waterfalls. The plunge, which creates a bouncing mass of mist, is so powerful that its roar is heard from a far distance.
Etymology of Dhuandhar Falls
Derived from the Hindi language, the word Dhuan means smoke and dhar means flow, which means that the waterfall cascades like a smoke of water vapour and hence the name Dhuandhar.
Tourism at Dhuandhar Falls
Tourists can access the waterfall and get a picturesque view by going on a cable car service or ropeway which is easily available. The ropeway facility starts from the eastern bank of the Narmada River, crosses the river and then drops the people off at the west bank of the River.
