Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kangra District, Himachal PradeshDhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most scenic sanctuaries of Himachal Pradesh, located in the district of Kangra. It spans over an area of 944 square kilometres. The sanctuary was established in the year 1994 by the wildlife department of Himachal Pradesh Government. Majestic mountains robed in snow enclose the sanctuary on its three sides and a magnificent valley spreads in its front. The place exhibits a rich diversity of flora, fauna and avian population. It also hosts a mini zoo called Gopalpur Zoo. The charm of the surrounding landscape makes Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary a highly picturesque destination and a famed tourist spot.

Geography of Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary
Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary is a high altitude forest which lies between Jogindernagar and Nurpur however its area lacks exact demarcation. The sanctuary has also been regarded as an Important Bird Area owing to its vast diversity of avian population. The altitude of the region ranges from 700 to 1400 metres. Alpine meadows and rocky mountains covered in snow beautifully dot the sanctuary.

Flora and Fauna of Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary
Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to a plethora of wild animals like Sambar, Rabbits, Angora, Asiatic Lion, Deer, Red Fox, Black Bear, Leopard and many more. Civet, Pheasant, Cheer, Himalayan Ibex and Himalayan Tee Pie can also be commonly spotted here. Prominent flora found in the sanctuary includes mixed Conifers, Pine, Oaks, Spruce, Deodars and others. Grassy slopes and meadows of the sanctuary are covered with Rhododendron and Oak forest. The sanctuary enjoys a mild temperate climate all round the year which makes the visit to the sanctuary pleasing anytime and supports a wide array of wildlife.

Visiting Information
Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary is best visited between the period of April and October. A number of eco tourism spots are present inside and around the sanctuary. It also caters to the adventure sports lovers by providing the facilities of trout fishing and paragliding. Wildlife enthusiasts greatly relish the place. Thamsar pass and Thamsar Lake are nearby tourist attractions.
