Deva Raya I was a ruler of the Sangama Dynasty and supervised the Vijayanagar Empire. The period from 1406 to 1422 CE saw the rule of Deva Raya I. After the demise of the king Harihara II, his sons entered into a dispute regarding the throne. Finally, Deva Raya I emerged victorious and became the new emperor of Vijayanagar empire. Throughout his regime, Deva Raya fought numerous battles against many rulers like Gajapati s of Kalinga, Velamas of Telangana, Reddis of Kondavidu and the Bahmani Sultan of Gulbarga. Despite all such fierce battles and conquests, Deva Raya was known to be a capable ruler who was able to administer his extensive territory.
Deva Raya I, like his grandfather Harihara I, encouraged Madhura, who was a Jain Kannada poet. It is said that during his regime, there was a conflict regarding a property between the Somesvara temple trust and the Shanka Jainalya of Gadag district. This matter was believed to have been settled in a friendly manner. Following his death, Ramachandra Raya and Vijaya Raya succeeded Deva Raya II.
