It is located on the banks of the Beas River. The town is on the Kangra-Mubarakpur road, and is around 10 km from Jwalamukhi and Balta. The town is easily accessible by airways and railways. Ranital Railway Station is the nearest railway station and the nearest airport is the Gaggal Airport.

According to the 2001 census report, Dera Gopipur had a population of 4336 inhabitants. Males constitute 52% of the population and females constitute 48% of the population. In Dera Gopipur 11% of the population is less than six years of age. Dera Gopipur has an average literacy rate of 79% which is higher than the national average which is 59.5%. The literacy rate of the male population is 82% and the female population is 76%.

Dehra Gopipur is an ideal base for fishing. Ideal fishing areas like Pong Dam, Pattan, Kurn and Nadaun are easily accessible from here. Jwalamukhi Temple, one of the Shaktipithas, is a prominent shrine, which is visited by devotees.
