Deepankar De is a noted actor of Bengali film industry. He has earned recognition as one of the most versatile actors through his portrayal of varied roles as hero, character artists and villain. The actor marked his cinematic debut with the eminent film director Satyajit Ray`s movie Seemabaddha in the year 1971. Subsequently his acting proficiency was spotted by a number of film makers and he starred in numerous art and commercial movies. He has also worked in a number of television serials. Apart form acting, Deepankar De is also an adept Sitar player and has received training from Mustaq Ali Khan.
Early Life of Deepankar De
Deepankar De was born on 5th July 1944 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. He completed his schooling form St. Xavier`s School in the batch of 1962. He did his graduation in Economics from Presidency College and completed his Masters Degree from Jadavpur University.
Career of Deepankar De
For pursuing a career in acting, Deepankar De had directly approached the acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray and expressed his passion for acting. Satyajit Ray in the year 1971 thus considered him for his movie Seemabaddha in a small role. He got his first major role with the movie Hariye Khuji in 1974 under the direction of Swadesh Sarkar. After his debut movie, he teamed up again with Satyajit Ray for a few more films such as Agantuk, Shakha Proshakha and Ganashatru for which he received huge appreciations. His portrayal of double role in Tapan Sinha`s film Bancharamer Bagan earned him huge praises. Some of his other prominent Bengali films include Jana Aranya, Mohunbaganer Meye, Samadhan, Subarnagolak, Arpita, Gayak, Mouna Mukhar, Kidnap, Abohomaan, Unishe April, Prem by Chance, Chirasathi and many others.
Deepankar De tried his hands in direction with a telefilm named Jyotishi. Apart form films he also works in theatres, Jatras and television serials. He has also worked extensively in worldwide plays.
Achievements of Deepankar De
Deepankar De had received the B.F.J.A award for his role in the movie Naukadubi. In the year 1986 his performance in the movie Parama, under the direction of Aparna Sen, earned him National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor.
