Deepak Shodhan is a former Indian Test cricketer, who was born on 18th October 1928 in Ahmedabad (Gujarat). He is hailing from Gujarat and represented Indian National Team from Western Zone. Deepak Shodhan was a good hockey player of his times. But being a left-handed batsman, he needed a specially made `left-handed hockey stick" which dissuaded him from the field of hockey.
Deepak Shodhan, who is also known as Roshan Harshadlal "Deepak" Shodhan and Deepak Harshadlal Shodhan was a left hand batsman and occasional medium pace bowler. He was the second Indian batsman, after Lala Amarnath, to score a hundred on the test debut.
Deepak Shodhan was selected against Pakistan Cricket Team on the weight of the 89 runs that he scored for West Zone against the Pakistanis earlier in the tour. Named as 12th man for the 1952 Calcutta (Kolkata) test, he took the field after Vijay Hazare was unable to play.
At Calcutta (Kolkata) in a curious Indian innings where every batsman reached double figures, Deepak Harshadlal Shodhan scored 110 at batting at No.8. He added 40 runs for the last wicket with Ghulam Ahmed. Roshan Harshadlal "Deepak" Shodhan or Deepak Harshadlal Shodhan scored 45 runs and 11 runs in the first Test at Port of Spain against West Indies that followed. Deepak Shodhan missed the next three Tests, and when picked for the last match of the series he fell ill. He scored an important 15 runs in the second innings batting at No.10. That turned out to be his last Test as he was never again selected to play for India.
The average of 60.33 still remains the highest average in a completed career by an Indian batsman. Deepak Shodhan represented Gujarat Cricket team for most of the Ranji Trophy career before switching to Baroda Cricket Team (Vadodara).
