Dams in Uttar Pradesh are well known for the purpose of electricity generation, supplying drinking water and irrigation in the state. Some of these dams are Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Dam, Parichha Dam, Matatila Dam and Jamni Dam.

Dams In Uttar PradeshDams in Uttar Pradesh have been constructed on various rivers with the main objective of power generation in the state. They also play an important role in water storage, supplying drinking water and irrigation in the state. The most important dam related projects of the state are the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar dam and the Parichha Dam. These, along with some other Dams in Uttar Pradesh are mentioned below.

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Dam
Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Dam or Rihand Dam has been constructed over the Rihand River, a tributary of Son. It is situated at Pipri in Sonbhadra District in Uttar Pradesh. The dam is the largest man made reservoir in India and is considered to be a pride of Uttar Pradesh. Owing to the presence of Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar, the state of Uttar Pradesh is known as the power generating state in India. The area surrounding the dam has very wealthy reserves of coal. This area is popularly known as Singrauli, which is also a coalfield zone in Uttar Pradesh. This place is one of the prime electricity-generating centers in India.

Parichha Dam
Parichha Dam stands on Betwa River and is located about 25 kilometers from Jhansi. The dam can be sited on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway No. 25. Parichha Dam has a reservoir or a composed stretch of water that stretches to Notghat Bridge and is known for water sports. Dams In Uttar Pradesh

Matatila Dam
Matatila Dam was built during 1952-1964 on Betwa River in Lalitpur District. It has a length of about 6.30 km and height of about 33.53 meters. This dam encompasses an area of almost 20,720 square kilometers and has a storage capacity of about 1132.68 million cubic meters.

Jamni Dam
Jamni Dam was constructed during 1962-1973 on Jamni River in Lalitpur District. The dam is about 6.40 km long and about 19.18 meters high. This dam has an area of about 414 square kilometers and a storage capacity of about 92.89 million cubic meters.

Rohini Dam
Rohini Dam, constructed during 1976-1984 on Rohini River is located in Lalitpur. It has a length of about 1.65 km and is about 15.50 meters high. The area of this dam is around 44 square kilometers. The dam has a storage capacity of about 12.12 million cubic meters.

Shahzad Dam
Shahzad Dam was constructed during 1973-1992 on Shahzad River in the outskirts of Lalitpur. It has a length of about 4.16 km and a height of about 18.00 meters. The area of this dam is almost 514 square kilometers and it"s storage capacity is about 130.00 million cubic meters.

Govind Sagar Dam
Govind Sagar Dam was constructed during 1947-1953 on Shahzad River. It is located in Lalitpur. It is about 3.60 km long. The dam is about 18.29 meters high and has an area of about 368 square kilometers. It"s storage capacity of about 96.8 million cubic meters.

Sajnam Dam
Sajnam Dam was built during 1977-1990 on Sajnam River. It is located close to Chandawali in Lalitpur district. The dam has a length of about 5.15 km, height of about 18.78 meters, area of about 290 square kilometers and storage capacity of about 83.50 million cubic meters.

Other Dams in Uttar Pradesh
Some of the other Dams in Uttar Pradesh are Bachara Dam, Baghla Dam, Bhagwan Pur Dam and Bhainsora Dam.
