Dama is a prince, the son of Narishyanta, whose father Marutta was a Chakravartti or universal monarch. Markandeya Purana provides the following curious story of Dama. Dama rescued his bride Sumana, daughter of the king Dasarha from his rivals.

One of them Bapushmat killed Marutta, who had retired into the woods after relinquishing his crown to his son Narishyanta and Dama`s father. Later, Dama in retaliation killed Bapushmat and made the Pinda or obsequial offering to his father of his flesh.

Dama is also the name of the eldest son of king Bhima, of Vidarbha and brother of Damayanti.
