Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Jamshedpur in the Indian state of Jharkhand and is situated on the ranges of Dalma Hills. The Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is based at a height of 3,000 ft above sea level, surrounded with lush green vegetation. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 193 sq. km. and lies in the catchment area of Subarnarekha River and adjoining Purulia District of West Bengal. The sanctuary, which lies on the National Highway No. 33 near Jamshedpur, was inaugurated by Sanjay Gandhi in the year 1975.
Flora and Fauna of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary
The region of Dalma Hills consists of an undulating landscape with plateau, high hillocks, open fields and deep valleys that offer varied habitat for flora and fauna. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is pregnant with rich vegetation and dense forest that cover the entire area and consists of numerous species of trees and plants. The forests in the sanctuary are usually Dry Mixed Deciduous with few Dry Peninsular Sals. The chief species of trees available are Jamun, Terminalias, Dhaura, Karam, Kendu etc.
Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary consists of numerous species of animals such as Elephant, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, Black Buck, Monkey, Tiger, Leopard, Mugger Crocodile, Giant Squirrel, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Porcupine, Gaur, Gharial, Wild Pig, Wild Dogs and various species of birds and snakes. Elephant is the major tourist attraction of the sanctuary. During summer season, numerous elephants migrate to the sanctuary in search of water.
Tourism of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary
The wildlife sanctuary is the hamlet of many wild animals and bird fauna. Thus, the visitors can experience and view the wild life in their natural habitat. The immense forest land is a perfect conducting for trekking expeditions. Most of the trekking trails are appropriate for mild to medium trekking. Moreover there is also a temple of Lord Shiva in the vicinity and numerous devotees visit the temple during Shivaratri. Convenient accommodations are also available in the wildlife sanctuary as there are guesthouses of Tata Steel and Forest Department.
The best time to visit Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is between February to March and October to June. The summer months in the wildlife sanctuary are rather pleasing and tourists from around the country are attracted to the Dalma Sanctuary.
