Dada Hari Vav is one of the finest step wells built in the city of Ahmedabad. Built in 1501 this is constructed with an intention to provide a resting space for the travellers in scorching heat. Presently it is one of the most popular tourist spots in Ahmedabad which depict the fine architecture of Ahmedabad city.

This is among the unique step wells which used to be constructed for providing drinking water that could also be used as a cooling chamber. Dada Hari Vav was built during the reign of Mehmud Begda in 1501. Marked with intricate sculptures and decorative carvings this is one of the most exclusive structures of the medieval period. This was built for the purpose of providing shelter for the travellers who used to pass through this region. This was at the same time used to be one of the well built harems surrounded with excellent corridors and lavish pavilions. Built under the supervision of Bai Harir Sultani who was the superintendent of the Vav, this was one of the largest resting places of Ahmedabad.

Dada Hari Vav is mainly known for its architecture. It is designed in an octagonal shape with a number of steps. The interior of the well is decorated with intricate sculptures. The sculptures of Dada Hari Vav include some fine figures of birds and flowers as well as human figures which are sculptured with great excellence. Decorated with a number of columns, intricately designed arches and well designed panels, this is included among the religious places of Gujarat. The water of the well is considered as pure water which can cater to the religious needs as well. Though it was constructed under the supervision of the Muslim rulers yet its architecture and sculptures reflect the great influence of Hindu craftsmanship that prevailed in Saurashtra.

Thus known for beautiful architecture and splendid sculptures this is one of the best structures of Gujarat. Though the place was affected by the recent earthquakes still it continued to maintain its glory and age old glamour.
