Colleges in West Bengal offer various courses. Some Colleges provide education in specialized fields such as agriculture, Juridical Sciences, Health Sciences or Technology. West Bengal has a rich heritage of academics.

Colleges of West BengalWest Bengal has a rich heritage of academics. Many a students achieved higher studies in this state. The movement of Education started in West Bengal from the renaissance period under the leadership of many great educationists, pioneered by Vidyasagar. After the independence and partition, many people came to West Bengal from the then Pakistan, which increased the necessity to open more colleges. Now-a-days there are several colleges in West Bengal, which are under different Universities.

A number of colleges of West Bengal have added a dimension to the quality of higher studies in the state.

Bethune College
Bethune College is one of the most reputed women`s College. It was established by Sir John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune. The College has a rich history of many years and many famous students brighten up its alumni list.

Dinabandhu Andrews College
The college is located at the southernmost part of the city at the fringe of Semi-urban area. The college offers many subjects to study in B.A, B,Sc and B,Com stream. Presently a post graduation course in Zoology is also taught here.

Presidency College
Presidency College is the most prestigious academic institution of Kolkata. This is one of the oldest colleges, which have a continuous brilliant record in academics. The college is mainly known for its excellent faculty, teaching method and superb performance. A huge number of alumni of Presidency College have earned fame in their respective fields in India and abroad.

The Scottish Church Collegehe
Scottish Church College is one of the oldest missionary college, which brought European enlightenment to the society during Bengal Renaissance. Many famous persons have studied in this college, who later earned fame in various disciplines.

St. Xaviers College
The St. Xaviers College was established by the Jesuites many years ago in Calcutta to bring higher education in this city. The College started as Arts College, but gradually introduced many subjects in Science and Commerce. Presently the college is famous for its Computer Center as well as Open University of IGNOU.

Rani Birla Girls` College
Rani Birla Girls` College is very prestigious college for Women`s study. The college is located in a convenient location of South Kolkata. The students of this college take part in various extra-curricular activities apart from the studies.

Asutosh College
Asutosh College is another renowned college of South Kolkata, which was set up by the great mathematician and educationist, Sir Asutosh Mukherjee. The college contains huge number of students and a large faculty and offers many subjects to study.

Lady Brabourne College
Lady Brabourne College has earned reputation of being an excellent academic institution for women`s education. The College was named after Lady Brabourne, the wife of Lord Brabourne, then Governor of Bengal. The faculty of this college is very sincere and dedicated and the students perform exceptionally well in the University examinations.

Surendranath College is a century old academic institution, which is the witness of many political and social upheavals. Presently the college offers many modern subjects in the undergraduate degree course. The alumni list of this college consists of dazzling galaxies, who are very famous in their own sphere.

Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College
The Rastraguru Surendranath College is the premier college of that locality. The college has introduced many modern courses along with the traditional subjects of study. This college has a well-equipped computer center and there are efforts to introduce some professional Diploma courses.

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College
This College was previously known as Birla College of Science and education. Birla College of Science and Birla College of Education was established separately and was amalgamated into one college later. The college offers various subjects in all the streams viz B.A, B.Sc and B.Com.

Moulana Azad College
This College was established with the purpose to educate the Muslim students only. But letter this college was opened to all the students irrespective of caste, creed and sex. The college offers post graduation course in Zoology along with many under graduation course.

Bangabasi College
This is an old college located in the heart of Calcutta. The college has three sections-morning, day and night. The college observed its centenary in the year 1987. The alumni list includes many famous personalities. The college disseminates the ideal of reverence, truth and humanities along with general studies.

Barasat Government College
Barasat Government College is a well-known academic institution in the North 24 Parganas. The College has morning section for the students of general degree course while the day section consists of only the students from Honors stream.

Bidhannagar Government College
Colleges of West Bengal Bidhannagar Government College has been established recently and has all the modern facilities of laboratory, library and studies. The college has a three-storied beautifully decorated building, which was established on a huge area of seventy thousand square feet. The college is a co-educational one but there is no hostel facility for the students.

South Calcutta Girls` College
South Calcutta Girls` College provides higher education to the women of the locality. The college offers both B.A and B.Sc courses. There is Netaji Subhas Open University in this college to provide distance-learning facility.

Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration
This is the only college in the city that provides solely commerce education. Both Higher Secondary course and Graduation course are studied in this college. The college has two sections-morning and day.

Jogamaya Devi College
Jogamaya Devi College is one of the largest women`s colleges in West Bengal, which attracts students from different parts of state and country as well as neighboring countries. The college encourages the students to establish themselves in all spheres of life. It offers honors in fourteen subjects in both arts and science.

Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College
This College is a premier academic institution in South Kolkata. This college teaches both Science and Humanities in the undergraduate level. The college distinctly holds M.Sc. classes in Chemistry and Physics with affiliation to the Madurai Kamraj University.

Loreto College
The College was established by religious institute in order to disseminate education among young women. The college teaches B.A. and B.Sc courses. There are also B.A. major in Communicative English and Computer Applications. The college has a very well equipped computer center.

Maharaja Manindra Chandra College
Colleges of West Bengal The college is situated in the north of Kolkata. There are many traditional courses offered in both B.A. and B.Sc honours. Apart from this, many add-on career oriented certificate courses are also done in this college, which is sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC). Netaji Subhas Open University was established in this college.

Narasinha Dutt College
Narasinha Dutt College is the oldest college in the district Howrah and the biggest college in West Bengal. The college had a very humble beginning but now it offers many courses in B.A., B.Sc and B.Com. The College has evening and morning shifts where commerce and humanities are studied respectively.

Netajinagar Day College
Netajinagar Day College is a NAAC recognized college, situated in the South Kolkata. The college aims at to serve higher number of students. Various honours and general courses are offered in B.A.. B.Sc and B.Com courses.

Prafulla Chandra College
Colleges of West Bengal Prafulla Chandra College was formerly known as City College of Commerce located at South Kolkata. The college was established by the Brahmo Samaj Education Society as the part of social movement of Sadharon Brahmo Samaj. The college works at evening session only.

Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira was established following the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. The college was assessed to have the excellent A+ grade by NAAC. The Vidyamandira was upgraded into a three-year degree college that was affected from July, 1960. Apart from the traditional courses, the applied courses are offered under UGC scheme. The college is entirely residential

Ramakrishna Mission Residential College,
NarendrapuThis is a purely residential college and only boys are allowed to study here irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. The College can boast over its excellent academic results in the university exams for many decades. The college also follows the paragons of Swami Vivekananda.

Sivanath Sastri College
Sivanath Sastri College is the only College that provides commerce teachings to the women students. The college is also known as South City College, morning. The College is situated in South Kolkata and contains century old Brahmo tradition. NAAC assessed this college within B+ grade.

Colleges of West Bengal Vivekananda College, Barisha
The Vivekananda College at Barisha aims to teach the students both from Kolkata and rural South Bengal. The College offers Honours in thirteen subjects in Science and Humanities. The College runs in two shifts-morning and day shifts.

Women`s Christian College
The Women`s Christian College is a minority religious academic institution, which provides education to all women students irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The students enthusiastically take part in various extra-curricular activities along with their study.
