Coimbatore Elephant Reserve is a beautiful wildlife habitat established to provide protection to elephants, as well as several other kinds of vegetation, animals, birds, reptiles, etc. in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is administered by the Coimbatore Forest Division which takes care of all the animals of south India and this Elephant Reserve is situated in Kallar, which is one of the main elephant corridors in this region. Jaccanare and Kallar are significant elephant corridors in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the other elephant paths existent in the Coimbatore Forest Division involve Bhavanisagar, Kodunagaraipallam, Mangalapalayam, Mudumalai, Odanthorai, Anaikatty, Sigarapathy, Kunjapanai, Nellithorai, Thanikandy, Moyar, Hulical, Pillur, Mannakad and Walayar.
Fauna of Coimbatore Elephant Reserve
Wild elephants roam about freely in the Coimbatore Elephant Reserve in tiny herds, along Iruttupallam, Jaccanare, Anaikatty R.F., Bolampatty Valleys, Walayar, Singapathy and Sholakkarai pathways. They gorge on bamboos and sometimes enter the nearby agricultural fields and feed on the crops and paddy. The other animals present here are Sloth Bear, Gaur, Common Langur, Barking Deer, Bonnet Macaque, Sambhar, Nilgiri Tahr, Indian Porcupine, Wild Boar, Panther, Wild Dog, Black-naped Hare and Malabar Giant Squirrel.
Caecilian, frogs and toads are some of the amphibians of Coimbatore Elephant Reserve who are noticed on trees, underground and in water. This region also boasts of various diverse kinds of reptiles including attractive snakes, King Cobra, Chameleon, Geckos, Common Cobra, Agamas, Green Lizard, Garden Lizard, Skinks and others. The climate and habitats of Coimbatore Elephant Reserve is perfect for the survival of so many kinds of reptiles, especially snakes. Bolampatti forest mountain ranges, which is enriched with deciduous forests are great for the King Cobras which are found in large quantities here.
