The City Palace Museum was established in the year 1969. Maharana Bhagwat Singh ji is credited with the establishment of this Palace Museum. The reason behind the establishment of this museum was the protection of the cultural heritage and the time honored traditions of the people of Mewar.
Architectural Design of City Palace Museum
The City Palace Museum is located inside the complex of City Palace. In A.D. 1559 (more than four centuries ago), Rana Udai Singh II, the father of Rana Pratap, laid the foundation of the City Palace after the birth of his grandson Amar Singh I. The entrance gate of the City Museum is known as Ganesh Deori, which translates into the "Door of Lord Ganesha" in English. The museum has a Rajya Angan. Rajya Angan translates into the Royal Courtyard in English. It is known to be the exact place where Maharana Udai Singh ji was asked to construct a city by a sage. The museum is known to be divided into several pavilions and halls. Every pavilion is known to have a distinct theme of its own. Rooms along one side comprise historical paintings. The southern end of the museum consists of the Zenana Mahal. This Mahal is known to be the royal ladies" quarters. It was built in the 17th century.

City Palace Museum is a home to a variety of objects of great antiquity. Some of the authentic ancient items preserved in this palace museum are portraits, wall and antique paintings, ancient sculptures, curios, antiques and inscriptions.
This museum is a home to the relics belonging to Maharana Pratap. More specifically, his armor and the drums and bugles of Rana Sanga will be evident to the visitors. Paintings illustrating the Battle of Haldighati (1576) will be evident to the visitors. The Battle of Haldighati was fought between the Rana of Mewar, Maharana Pratap and Mughal Emperor Akbar`s forces led by Man Singh I, in Haldighati, Rajasthan on 18 or 21 June, 1576. The battle continued for about four hours. The Mewar forces under Maharana Pratap, one of the great Rajput heroes, fought bravely against the Mughal army. Antique paintings of Mewar and detailed Rajasthani art housed in the museum are considered to be noteworthy relics of the museum. Another exhibit of this museum is the turban of Khurram, who was popularly known as Emperor Shah Jahan. The turban is a representation of the friendship that survived between Shah Jahan and Maharana Khazan Singh.
Zenana Mahal is considered to be the place, the contents of which are capable of intimating the visitors with the royal legacy and conventions of the Maharanas of Mewar and Sisodia. It not only contains the arms and armor, but also paintings and photographs, majestic insignia, processional accouterments and various other objects. The long picture gallery of Zenana Mahal has pictures depicting lots of royal hunting scenes. Laxmi Chowk is known to be the Zenana Mahal"s central courtyard. It houses a beautiful white pavilion and a stable of howdahs palanquins.
