The Chota Nagpur Regiment was one of the auxiliary cavalry units of the former British Indian Army in undivided India. The regiment was formed in the year 1891 and was initially designated as the Chota Nagpore Mounted Rifles. It served as a division of the Cavalry Reserve that operated under the administration of the British authorities. Later in the year 1910, the battalion was re-designated as the Chota Nagpur Light Cavalry.

The light horse regiment was almost equal in strength to an army contingent and comprised of around 400 troops. It usually acted as a mounted infantry instead of a traditional cavalry regiment. In 1910, the British Indian cavalry regiment was renamed as Chota Nagpur Light Cavalry. Eventually the unit was titled as the Chota Nagpur Regiment in the year 1917.

After the withdrawal of the British Empire in India, the country attained political independence. But consequently the former British India was geographically divided into the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan by the Partition of India. Accordingly, the regiments of the British Indian Army were shared among the 2 newly formed sovereign states. However, the Chota Nagpur Regiment was dissolved in the year 1947.
