Chitrakoot Dham is on the banks of river Paisuni. It lies in latitude 25 10`N and longitude 80 53` E. According to legends it is said that during his fourteen years exile, Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana came to Chitrakoot . Thereafter they came into contact with sage Atri and Sati Anasuya.
Poet Tulsidas had spent many years in Chitrakoot. He had composed many verses there. Chitrakoot is a sacred place with countless temples.
Major attractions
Anasuya- Atri Ashram: This is around 4 kms away from Sphatikshila. It is considered as the hermitage of sage Atri and Anasuya that is surrounded by dense jungles. It houses statues of Anasuya, Atri, Dattatreya and Durvasa Muni.
Gupt-Godavari: The Gupt-Godavari caves are 9.66 km far from Anasuya Atri Ashram. It is a dark cave that has a tank which is known as `Sitakund`. Sometimes the water of the tank disappears which is mysterious.
Bharat Koop: It is believed that in order to crown lord Rama as the king of Ayodhya, his brother Bharat, collected the waters of sacred rivers to smear him with. Sage Atri advised to pour the water into a well which is now known as Bharat Koop. There is also a temple that is dedicated to Lord Rama.
Jankikund: Jankikund is on the banks of the river Mandakini. This is the place where Sita took her ceremonial dip daily morning.
Sphatikshila: This is located on the banks of river Paisuni where Ram & Sita used to sit and watch the serene surroundings. It is also believed that at this place, Jayant, son of lord Indra had pecked Sita in the guise of a crow.
Kalinjar: Kilanjar fort is around 88 km from Chitrakoot. It houses the Nilkanth Temple, Swargarohan Kund, Balkhandeshwar Mahadev Temple, Shivasari Ganga & Koti Tirth.
Rajapur: Rajapur is around 42 km from Chitrakoot. This place is considered as the birthplace of Goswami Tulsidas.
